saints/intrusive thoughts

ceramics

ancient accounts of the desert describe a solitude that does not necessarily bring peace but rather proliferation: voices without a source, unforeseen spectacles, recollections that are not memories, temptations untethered from desire. the hermit does not struggle against the world so much as against the persistence of thought once there is no longer enough of the world to occupy it – images become audible.
the works gathered in this exhibition approach a kind of inventory: objects as mental events, apparitions without fixed status, suspended between signal and noise. the difficulty of interrupting an image. perhaps sanctity begins there – in the experience of remaining before disturbance.
