the importance of being was a serial, multidisciplinary project developed between 2012 and 2022, rooted in the lives and works of artists and thinkers who profoundly shaped bonneville’s personal and artistic path. over ten years, they engaged with figures such as antónio de macedo (2012–2013), simone de beauvoir (2013–2014), agustina bessa-luís (2014–2016), paul b. preciado (2016–2017), georges bataille (2018–2019), alan turing (2019–2020), and marguerite duras (2021–2022). with each of them, bonneville developed an intimate and sustained relationship — absorbing their philosophies, creative gestures, and ways of inhabiting the world, allowing their legacies to unfold through their own body and imagination.
the texts included in this publication begin with the third work of the series, the importance of being agustina bessa-luís. the importance of being antónio de macedo was based entirely on appropriated material, and the importance of being simone de beauvoir was created without written text. beginning with the importance of being paul b. preciado, bonneville also started publishing artist editions — hybrid books offering fragments of research, citations, appropriations, processes, emotions, and images: diaristic essays, performative scripts, and encounters with strangers who gradually became intimate companions.
alongside the previously published texts (from the artist editions), this book also brings together unpublished materials, including those written in collaboration with diogo bento and tiago vieira for the importance of being agustina bessa-luís, as well as texts created for performances, lectures, and magazines. bonneville has also included the technical credits of each work, acknowledging all those whose collaboration made the project possible, and underscoring how every format — performance, film, installation, writing — exists both independently and as part of a larger constellation.
