collective exhibition

years ago, upon completing aldous huxley’s final novel, ‘island,’ the question of how to ignite a collective passion for this book consumed my thoughts. contemplating its themes sparked the idea of creating an artwork inspired by the book and inviting fellow artists to join in.
for this collective exhibition, twelve national and international artists were invited to use the book as the foundation for their artistic explorations, occupying various spaces within the centennial bookstore sá da costa in lisbon.
‘island,’ published in 1962, presents a utopian vision where eastern and western ideals harmonize to prevent the descent of a democratic society into totalitarianism. its relevance resonated deeply with our world, as it does now, encompassing portugal and europe, both seemingly on the brink of collapse. in response, this movement towards creation and collaboration endeavored to unearth an impulse that transcends mere survival. this exhibition served as an initial step towards breaking down barriers of isolation.
